Our second year of short-form prizes has again brought an extraordinary collection of entries from around the world.

It’s heartening to find so many different takes on the thriller genre, with so many individual styles and such diverse settings.

And all without violence to women!

Like Glue

I guess you could say I’m “homegrown”, having lived in Indiana all my life. I haven’t worked for compensation in a number of years, although in the past I’ve worked as a cashier, a postal clerk, a secretary, and a cleaning lady.

I like writing contests; it gives me a theme, a word limit, and a deadline. In 2017 I received an Honorable Mention in the Memoir category of Writer’s Digest’s Annual Competition.  In 2019 I received Honorable Mentions in Institute For Writers Fantasy First Pages and Institute For Literature’s Lost and Found Poetry Contest.

The Staunch Book Prizes for thriller novels and short fiction open in February 2022.

Check out our sister project The Staunch Test which rates films and television dramas for violence against women. There you will find a growing database of titles rated as PASS, FAIL or DEBATE, and many reviews of films and television shows from the Staunch Test perspective.

Arendse Lund

The Toll Bridge

Arendse Lund is an award-winning writer whose work has appeared in The Asahi ShimbunAudeamus, and Alchemy: Journal of Translation, among others. Her world building has been called “vividly imagined and genuinely creepy,” which is the highest praise she can imagine. She earned her doctorate researching medieval manuscripts and the law at University College London, which continues to give her inspiration for her short stories while simultaneously solidifying her belief that truth is (often) stranger than fiction. She is currently working on her first novel. You can find her at www.arend.se
